Home to Adventure
Situated near the Mt Nebo Wilderness area in southern Utah County, Payson is close to hunting, fishing, camping and hiking. Originally Fort Peteeneet after Chief Peteeneet, a Ute chief, the same was eventually shortened to Payson. The Mormon Settlers founded one of the first free schools in Utah, the Peteeneet Academy, which is now a museum. The Academy's museum includes a unique 1901 classroom, a Victorian inner home, a historical exhibit, and two art galleries.
